This particular contract actually involves both – an influential member of the aristocracy sent the heroes on the trails of a young monk named Andolay Cleantis, who reportedly unearthed the most forbidden manuscript of all time, the “Defense of Heresy.” Not quite like the Risk Breakers in Vagrant Story, Chasers are mercenaries who specialize in finding and retrieving lost, escaped or stolen persons or items. The game follows the Chaser Giauque and his companions on their quest into the ruins. As its spiritual predecessor, the quest takes place entirely in a single building, here the Sun-Gilt Palace of the Rahab, the monument a king of a long-lost dynasty dedicated to his queen. As part of Level-5’s Guild01 project, a bundle of small-scale creations by renowned Japanese game auteurs like Goichi Suda and Yoot Saito, Matsuno’s latest work retailed only in Japan, while the West got it as a download exclusive in the 3DS eShop.Īlthough Crimson Shroud takes place in a new fantasy world, it harkens back to Vagrant Story a lot. Well, at least he now has thrown his fans a bone with Crimson Shroud. Whenever he leaves one of his creations in the hands of others, only half the heart ever remains – the “true” Matsuno games are deep, dark and serious, with no plucky 18-year old “veteran” world savers or silly slapstick sequences. It truly is a shame, for even though his style is distinctly Japanese, it’s at the same time very unique, and very atypical of Japanese RPG storytelling. Not only are half of them hidden behind obtuse mechanics – as is the case with Vagrant Story and at least the original version of Tactics Ogre – strictly speaking there hasn’t been a true Matsuno fantasy story since Final Fantasy XII, which is arguable, since he had to bow out in mid-development due to health reasons, and what remains is only a twisted travesty of Ivalice. ![]() Once the bubble has taken too much incoming damage, it'll explode and damage nearby enemies as it "retaliates when losing charges".It isn’t always easy being an admirer of Yasumi Matsuno’s enticing worlds and narratives. This can be seen by the color of Crimson Shroud's bubble as it'll change color with every impact until it's temporarily destroyed. However, the protective barrier cast by Crimson Shroud has several layers of protection and it can absorb a few hits before bursting. Like the Laurel, Crimson Shroud casts a protective bubble around your character that, when hit by an enemy, activates invincibility frames for a brief moment granting you temporary invulnerability. Naturally, this is an insane amount of damage mitigation and the Crimson Shroud's defense is so strong that this Evolved Weapon is one of the must-have tools when attempting to kill Death.Īs likely expected, the Crimson Shroud evolution has a lot of similarities to its previous incarnation, the Laurel. So whether you're being attacked by feeble bats or the all-powerful Death, the maximum of amount of damage you'll take with each hit is only 10. ![]() The most important thing to know about the Crimson Shroud is that it caps all incoming damage to 10 damage per hit. ![]() Remember that the steps listed above do not need to be completed in any particular order to unlock the Crimson Shroud evolution. Once you've collected all three components, you'll need to upgrade them as indicated below:Īfter completing these upgrades, the last step in unlocking Crimson Shroud is to defeat a high-tier enemy after the 10-minute mark and the enemy will drop a chest with Crimson Shroud as a reward. It is recommended that you prioritize collecting the Metaglio Left because it can provide you a Recovery and Max Health buff whereas the Metaglio Right functions like the Gold Ring and grants enemies increased speed, health, quantity, and frequency. ![]() Remember that while Metaglio Left and Metaglio Right can be collected as floor loot, you'll need to obtain the Laurel from a Level Up selection screen. Now that you've acquired the Yellow Sign you can enter any stage and begin collecting the Laurel, Metaglio Left, and Metaglio Right.
